DC Emancipation Day



Mayor Bowser Presents: The DC Emancipation Day 21st Anniversary Parade and Concert 

Now - Apr 19, 2026. 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.

DC Emancipation Day marks the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act on April 16, 1862, which freed over 3,000 enslaved people in 365Թϲ, D.C. It was the first major act of emancipation in the US, ahead of the Emancipation Proclamation.


2026 will be the 21st year of celebrating an official City holiday, featuring parades, reenactments, and cultural events honoring African American history. It’s a time to reflect on the fight for freedom and equality.


You are invited to join for a day-long of family friendly events, a look back to history and celebrations, including: 1 pm - Franklin Park Festival Grounds Open 
The festival grounds at Franklin Park (1332 I St NW) will have music, food, and entertainment for all ages until 8:30 pm.


1:30 pm - 21st Anniversary Parade Begins 
With a stellar parade featuring community groups, bands and entertainers. 
Starting point:14th Street NW and New York Ave 
Ending Point: Franklin Park 


2:30 pm - Emancipation Day Concert 
A magnificent concert with world renown talent. 


8:15 pm - Grand Finale 
The event closes out with a grand finale, marking the end of Emancipation Day 2026!
